National Compact Week 1 - 8 November 2007

1 – 8 November is National Compact Week. This represents an opportunity to re-invest in the meaning of the Compact and the principles that underpin it, and to make sure that these principles are making a difference to local practice.

The original Devon Compact was published in 1999. The Compact was reviewed, strengthened and re-launched as the Compact for Devon in June 2005. Three accompanying Codes of Practice were published in November 2006 – Equality & Diversity, Funding & Procurement, and Volunteering. Three further Codes of Practice are currently being developed and are due for publication in February 2008 – Consultation & Policy Appraisal, Community Groups, and Partnership.

Local Events

To celebrate Compact Week, we are holding various events around Devon to raise awareness of the Compact for Devon and to reinvigorate the debate about how best to use it. These include:

Holding an award-winning issue play called Volunteer Vera, detailing the complexities of the Compact. The play addresses the often difficult relationship between members of the voluntary sector and local authority officers – both often having different needs and agendas. All Vera wants to do is run her youth group – all the council officer wants to do is tick the relevant boxes!
