Volunteers Week 1-7 June 2010

Volunteers Week coming to town.
Do people volunteer for money?  Never .   For love?  Fifty-fifty.    Does it make the world better?  Yes: top prize.
Volunteers Week is here again, June 1 to 7, celebrating people who give time to a cause – anything from sorting CDs for charity to fighting Force 9 on a lifeboat.
In South Hams, the Volunteer Centre will be in the four market towns with a take on Tarrant:  Who Wants to be a Volunteer.   Questions will be about action in the community.   The prizes....  “Probably Smarties” explains co-ordinator Howard Owens.  “We want to talk with people.  On the street, we pick up on local needs and  people come forward who want to help”
“Our job is to help it all happen.   Every day, people say they want to do something, but wonder where to start.  As an accredited centre, we help with that – for free, of course”.
“We say glittering prizes aren’t about money (or even Smarties) but the buzz you get from helping out .  It’s best when it’s close to your heart – maybe helping people, or animals, or the environment.  Any of those can be hands-on, or behind the scenes as an administrator or trustee.   Talking of which, Making Tea is a key volunteer role at many an event”
Two examples of groups recently created by centre volunteers are Totnes Walk & Talk and Ivybridge Caring.  At the events, there will be information on those, and more than 350 other groups.
Starting June 1, Who Wants to be a Volunteer will be in Kingsbridge on the Tuesday, Dartmouth Wednesday, Ivybridge Thursday, Totnes Friday.  All 11 until 2.
